Invisalign clear aligners are a set of transparent, removable trays that take the place of metal brackets and wires. Each tray is made of smooth medical-grade plastic, fits closely over your teeth, and moves them a small amount before you swap it for the next one in the series. Because there are no wires or brackets, there are no food restrictions and brushing and flossing carry on as normal.
The trays are clear rather than invisible, and in ordinary conversation most people will not notice them. You take them out to eat, to drink anything other than water, to brush, and for a photograph if you would rather — which is what makes them workable around a full diary.
Treatment is planned from a 3D scan of your teeth. Before anything is manufactured, we walk you through the planned sequence of movements and how long the series is expected to take, so you can decide with the whole picture in front of you. Every few weeks you move to the next set of trays.
Crowding, gaps, and many bite problems can be treated this way, for teenagers with all their permanent teeth as well as adults. Whether it is the right approach for your case is the question the consultation answers.

Crowded teeth
There is more tooth than the arch has room for, so teeth twist and overlap.

Wearing your aligners

20 to 22 hours a day. Out only for eating, for drinking anything other than water, and for brushing.

Change on schedule. A new tray every one to two weeks, in the order we give you.

Clean them daily. Brush gently with a soft brush and clear soap. Not toothpaste, which scratches.

Use the case. Never a napkin. Trays wrapped in a napkin get thrown away, and that costs you time.

Brush before they go back in. Food trapped under a tray sits against the tooth all day.

Keep your check-ins. Every 6 to 8 weeks, so a problem gets caught while it is still small.

Retainers, after the trays
Teeth drift back towards where they started. Retainers are what stop that, and they are part of the treatment rather than an optional extra at the end of it.

- How long does Invisalign® treatment take?

- Are the aligners really invisible?
- They are clear, not invisible. The trays are made of BPA-free transparent plastic and are hard to spot in normal conversation. Some cases need small tooth-coloured attachments — think subtle dots — to guide specific tooth movements.

- Do I have to wear them all day?
- Yes — aligners only work when you wear them 20-22 hours per day. You remove them only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and brushing. Skipping wear time is the most common reason treatment runs longer than planned.
- Does Invisalign® treatment hurt?
- Expect mild pressure or soreness for a day or two each time you switch to a new tray — that is a sign the teeth are moving. There are no wires to poke or brackets to rub. Most patients describe it as pressure rather than pain, managed easily with over-the-counter pain relief.
