Proven strategies to help anxious patients get the care they need — comfortably
Dental anxiety affects an estimated 36% of the population — and up to 12% experience severe dental phobia. If you've been avoiding the dentist because of fear or anxiety, you're not alone, and you're not being irrational.
At Smile Makers of Georgia, we treat many patients who haven't seen a dentist in years because of anxiety. Our goal is to make dental care accessible and comfortable for everyone. Here are five proven strategies that actually work.
This is the most important step, and it's one many people skip. When you call to schedule, tell us you experience dental anxiety. This does several things:
At your appointment, remind us again. We'll check in more frequently, explain each step before we do it, and always ask before proceeding with anything new.
One of the biggest sources of dental anxiety is feeling out of control — the fear that once treatment starts, you can't stop it. A simple stop signal eliminates this fear completely.
Before we begin, agree on a signal — typically raising your left hand — that means "stop immediately, I need a moment." We will always honor it, no questions asked. Knowing you have this control makes most patients significantly more comfortable, even if they never use it.
Anxiety triggers the body's fight-or-flight response: rapid shallow breathing, increased heart rate, tense muscles. Controlled breathing is clinically proven to reverse this response within minutes.
Try the 4-7-8 method during your appointment:
You can also focus on breathing slowly and deliberately through your nose during treatment. This keeps your nervous system calm and gives your mind something to focus on other than the procedure.
Many of our patients bring headphones and listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks during treatment. Focusing your attention on something you enjoy redirects your mind away from the procedure. We're happy to accommodate this — just let us know.
For patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety, sedation dentistry is a game-changer. At Smile Makers of Georgia, we offer oral sedation — a prescription anti-anxiety medication taken before your appointment that produces a deeply relaxed, calm state.
With oral sedation:
Sedation is appropriate for any level of procedure — from a simple cleaning to major restorative work. If anxiety has been keeping you from needed care, sedation may be the solution that finally makes treatment possible for you.
Not all dental offices are equal when it comes to treating anxious patients. Look for a practice that:
At Smile Makers of Georgia, a calm, patient-centered experience is fundamental to how we practice. We believe dental care should never be something you dread — and we work hard to make sure it isn't.
We understand that anxiety is real and difficult to overcome. But it's important to know what happens when dental care is avoided long-term:
We know this isn't meant to add to your anxiety — it's meant to remind you that taking one small step toward treatment now prevents much bigger challenges later.
Let's talk about your anxiety and find an approach that works for you. Your comfort is our priority at every visit.
