Are Dental Implants Right for You?

A complete guide to dental implants — benefits, procedure, recovery, and candidacy

April 15, 2025 By Dr. Nagarjuna Meesa

Dental implants are widely considered the gold standard for replacing missing teeth — and for good reason. They look, feel, and function like natural teeth, and with proper care, they can last a lifetime.

If you're missing one or more teeth, you've likely been told about bridges, partial dentures, or implants. This guide will help you understand exactly what dental implants are, who they're right for, and what to expect from the process.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone where a tooth root once was. Over several months, the post fuses with the bone in a process called osseointegration — creating a stable, permanent anchor for a crown (artificial tooth) placed on top.

A complete implant has three parts:

  • The implant post — titanium screw placed in the jawbone
  • The abutment — connector piece that attaches to the top of the post
  • The crown — the visible tooth, custom-made to match your natural teeth

Implants vs. Other Tooth Replacement Options

Factor Dental Implants Bridge Dentures
Lifespan Lifetime with proper care 10–15 years 5–10 years
Bone preservation Yes — stimulates bone No No
Adjacent teeth affected No Yes (shaved down) No
Feels natural Yes Close Can slip/shift
Maintenance Brush and floss normally Special flossing required Remove nightly to clean

The Dental Implant Process

Getting implants involves several stages over a few months:

Step 1: Consultation and Planning

We take X-rays and 3D scans to assess your bone density and determine the precise placement location. If bone loss has occurred, a bone graft may be needed before implant placement.

Step 2: Implant Placement

The titanium post is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia. Most patients are surprised at how comfortable this procedure is. Recovery is typically 3–5 days of mild soreness.

Step 3: Osseointegration (Healing)

Over the next 3–6 months, the implant fuses with your jawbone. During this time you'll have a temporary crown. This phase is critical — the implant must be fully stable before the permanent crown is attached.

Step 4: Abutment and Crown Placement

Once healed, the abutment is attached and a custom-made crown is placed on top. The crown is color-matched to your natural teeth for a seamless look.

Total Timeline

From placement to final crown, the complete implant process typically takes 4–8 months. The result is a permanent tooth that functions exactly like a natural one.

Are You a Good Candidate for Implants?

Most healthy adults who are missing teeth are candidates for dental implants. Ideal candidates:

  • Have healthy gums (active gum disease must be treated first)
  • Have sufficient bone density in the jaw (or can receive a bone graft)
  • Don't smoke, or are willing to quit (smoking significantly impairs healing)
  • Are not pregnant
  • Don't have uncontrolled diabetes or autoimmune disorders

Even if you've been told in the past that you don't have enough bone for implants, advances in bone grafting techniques mean more patients are now candidates than ever before.

Caring for Your Implants

Dental implants are cared for just like natural teeth:

  • Brush twice daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush
  • Floss daily, including around the implant
  • Avoid chewing on extremely hard foods (ice, hard candy)
  • Visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings
  • Don't smoke — it's the leading cause of implant failure
