Flossing 101: Techniques for a Healthier Smile

Master the proper techniques that can prevent gum disease and keep your smile healthy

April 24, 2025 By Dr. Nagarjuna Meesa

Most people brush their teeth twice a day but skip flossing. This small omission leaves nearly 35% of each tooth's surface uncleaned — the spaces between teeth where cavities and gum disease most commonly begin.

At Smile Makers of Georgia, one of the most common things we see is patients who brush well but develop gum disease or cavities between teeth — almost always because they don't floss consistently or correctly. This guide will fix that.

Why Flossing Matters

Brushing cleans the front, back, and top surfaces of your teeth. Floss is the only tool that reaches the tight spaces between teeth and just below the gumline — where plaque builds up and eventually hardens into tartar (which only a dental cleaning can remove).

Consistent flossing helps prevent:

  • Gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis)
  • Cavities between teeth (interproximal cavities)
  • Bad breath from trapped food and bacteria
  • Bone loss caused by advanced gum disease

How to Floss Correctly: Step-by-Step

Traditional String Floss

  1. Start with about 18 inches of floss. Wind most around the middle fingers of each hand, leaving 1–2 inches to work with.
  2. Hold the floss taut between your thumbs and index fingers.
  3. Slide gently between teeth using a zigzag motion — never snap it into the gums.
  4. Curve the floss into a C-shape around each tooth, hugging the tooth's side as you go just below the gumline.
  5. Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.
  6. Don't forget the back sides of your last molars.

Common Mistake to Avoid

Snapping floss into the gums cuts tissue and causes bleeding, which makes people stop flossing. Use a gentle zigzag motion to guide the floss between teeth.

Floss Picks and Interdental Brushes

For people who struggle with traditional floss — whether due to dexterity issues, braces, or bridges — these alternatives work well:

  • Floss picks — pre-threaded, easy to use one-handed, good for back teeth
  • Interdental brushes — small brushes that fit between teeth, excellent for braces or wider gaps
  • Water flossers (Waterpik) — great as a supplement, especially for implants and bridges; not a complete replacement for string floss

When and How Often Should You Floss?

Floss once a day — any time that works for your routine. Most people find it easiest before bed so food and plaque aren't sitting against teeth overnight.

If your gums bleed when you start flossing, don't stop — this is a sign of inflammation from plaque buildup, not from flossing itself. With consistent daily flossing, bleeding should stop within 1–2 weeks.

Flossing with Dental Work

Braces

Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss to thread under the wire. Water flossers work well as a supplement. It takes more time but is critical — braces create many extra spots for plaque to hide.

Bridges

Use a floss threader to guide floss under the bridge. Clean under the false tooth (pontic) and along the gum tissue beneath it.

Implants

Floss around implants the same as natural teeth, but use unwaxed floss or implant-specific floss that grips the implant surface more effectively.

Signs You May Not Be Flossing Correctly

  • Gums bleed every time you floss (even after weeks of consistent flossing)
  • Gums are red, puffy, or tender
  • Your dentist keeps finding cavities between your teeth
  • Persistent bad breath even after brushing

If you're experiencing any of these, schedule a checkup. These can be signs of gum disease that needs professional treatment beyond flossing alone.
